Music
When children arrive at the music department they are immersed in a creative world. All abilities are embraced and yes, I believe your child can sing!
In addition to the National Curriculum, all children enjoy the opportunity to learn an instrument; a term of violin, recorder, keyboard and ukulele, which not only gives them a practical understanding of playing an instrument, but allows them to enjoy performing as part of a group. From Pre Prep, boys are introduced to a practical approach of learning, based on the ethos of Kodaly. This is supported by numerous opportunities to experience different percussion instruments.
There are regular performance opportunities over the year, including Open Mornings, formal and informal concerts, drama productions and assemblies. Performing on a regular basis, with different audiences, is the keystone to developing confidence and above all a sense of enjoyment to perform. All children take part in the various performances, such as the termly musical productions, church services; with the highlight being our annual Carol Service in December. Music festivals, performing to local community groups and charity gigs are all part of the rich tapestry of music at Parkside, ensuring there are opportunities for all, regardless of their ability, passion or talents. Music scholarships are regularly awarded to boys at senior school level.
There are opportunities to play in the Big Band, Rock Band, orchestra, ukulele group, Junior Choir, Senior Choir and the Chamber Choir.
We have a team of dedicated music teachers encompassing the whole range of instruments. Children are encouraged and supported to study for exams, and presently we use ABRSM, Trinity, LCM and Rock School examination boards.
The department has a wonderful concert hall, with lighting, sound and a grand piano; thus, giving a real sense of occasion when performing.
